New Member Spotlight: Gene Boyer
Born in Philadelphia and raised in Monroeville, Gene has called Pittsburgh home for the better part of 4 decades. A lifelong Steeler fan, Gene returns to Pittsburgh after spending the past three years working as a Project Manager on high-end interior projects in the DC Metro market. Having started his career in the construction business in the mid-90’s working with several MBE contractors during the “Plan B” days, he fell in love with the business and through a series of fortunate events, had the opportunity to build a career that is entering its 21st year. “I’ve been fortunate to be in the right place at the right time, was prepared to work hard and do whatever was asked when opportunities presented themselves”. Gene studied business and finance at Penn State and continued his education through further coursework and on the job training. A graduate of the Master Builders Associations Mentor Protégé’ Program and several Army Corps of Engineers certifications, Gene has worked on a broad range of construction projects, focusing the past 10 years on Owners Rep work and high-end interior fit outs. Now as Vice President of Business Development at Nello Construction, Gene is working with a perennial General Contractor who has been a fixture in the Western PA construction community since 1952. “Having the opportunity to work with Gino Torriero and the leadership team he has assembled to grow Nello’s market share in the Design/Build, Healthcare and Corporate Interior areas was a challenge I could not pass up. The opportunity to return to the city that shaped my career in this industry is a dream come true. I can’t wait for this next phase in my life and career and could not be happier to be a new member of SMPS Pittsburgh”.

Why did you join SMPS?
I joined SMPS because it is the premier organization for marketing professionals in the professional services industry. As a Business Development executive, it is imperative that I stay abreast of the latest techniques and approaches to effectively marketing my firm’s services. The opportunity to interact with marketing professionals of various levels of experience and diverse market sectors is invaluable. I’m here to listen, learn and grow our firm’s network. SMPS is the best place to do so and I’m happy to be a part of the organization.
What SMPS events are you most looking forward to?
The Heartland Conference looks like it will really be a great event. As I reintroduce myself to the Pittsburgh market, it will be great to have so many key players from the AEC community in one place. I’m very much looking forward to it.
What do you do in your free time?
Golf. Spend time with my family. Read anything by Clive Cussler or Robert Ludlum. Great “brain break material”.
People would be surprised to know that…
I spent 8 years as a working musician in my early 20’s and I still play a little from time to time.
